Mobile Receive Diversity
Overview
Mobile receive diversity technology offers network operators the ability to significantly enhance their network performance and improve their subscribers' mobile experience without any changes to the network. Now, device manufacturers can cost-effectively feature mobile receive diversity capabilities on 3G handsets with Qualcomm's integrated solutions.
Select Mobile Station Modem™ (MSM™) chipsets feature integrated support for mobile receive diversity, a technology that utilizes multiple antennas on the handset to improve the handset performance for wireless users and enhance network capacity. Mobile Receive Diversity (MRD) offers a transparent, seamless path to improving the mobile experience and supporting next-generation wireless services more effectively.
Benefits
- Offers significant performance gains for mobile handsets
Mobile handsets featuring receive diversity technology will experience greater average data rates and enhanced performance. The wireless user's experience is significantly improved, adding new value to 3G services. - Delivers substantial increases in network capacity and efficiency
Without any changes to the network, operators can now significantly increase their network capacity by up to a factor of two. The power required from base stations is reduced for greater efficiency and overall capacity. Networks can support any number of diversity-enabled and single-antenna handsets for a truly seamless transition. - Mobile receive diversity support integrated into select chipsets
Select Qualcomm chipsets integrate support for mobile receive diversity in order to minimize the development time and bill-of-materials costs associated with enabling mobile handsets with the technology. Device manufacturers can offer a wide range of handsets with mobile receive diversity in a slim form-factor, possible only with chipsets that feature a high level of integration. - Enables the simultaneous operation of multiple services
The use of two receivers enables two services – such as a CDMA voice call and GPS signal processing – to occur simultaneously. This delivers new possibilities for location services, emergency services, and other wireless applications requiring concurrent execution of multiple functions.
